Over the years, many Vermont Olympians have worn ski medals on the podium. Cross country skiing caught on in the United States at the Trapp Family Lodge and telemark skiing began its revival here. Vermont is home to Bill Koch, the first American to win an Olympic medal in Nordic skiing and we have sent many others to the Olympics from our home snow over the years. The Green Mountain State is a haven for nordic skiers of all tastes and experience levels. The 2010 Olympics featured three Vemonters competing in Nordic skiing events – Liz Stephen, Caitlin Compton, and Andy Newell. As snowshoeing has caught fire, many of our cross-country centers have added terrain just for snowshoeing. Staff at cross-country centers will bring an enormous amount of experience and enthusiasm to your vacation, whether it's pioneering new ways to teach cross country skiing or leading back country snowshoe treks. Vermont has 30 cross-country touring centers throughout the state with roughly 885 miles of Nordic trails. Vermont is also home to the famous Catamount Trail , featuring 300 miles of cross country skiing the entire length of Vermont!
