John Entwhistle, Herbie Hancock, Strangefolk, and Jurrasic 5 Big Acts, Small Venues

Sure, the scale of things is small in Vermont - unless you're talking about live music.
So you're tired of battling big crowds to see your favorite music artists? Head to Vermont where big name performers play some of the smallest, most intimate music clubs you'll find anywhere.

Tenacious D performs Any discussion of live music in Vermont starts in Killington where a number of venues host national acts all winter long. The Pickle Barrel and the Wobbly Barn are two of the most notable. In Burlington, Higher Ground has a packed schedule of local, regional and national artists including big names like the Wallflowers, Lucinda Williams and occasional appearances by members of Vermont's own Phish and The Samples.

On the eastern side of the state the scenic village of Bradford is home to the Middle Earth Music Hall. This 150 seat spot has the atmosphere of sitting in your living room where nationally known folks, such as Steve Forbert, Cheryl Wheeler, Stacey Earle or Annie Clark, just happen to drop by for an evening of music. You can check them out at: www.middle-earth-music.com.

In Middlebury, a local church is the performance space for the After Dark Music Series. Started in 1995 the series has hosted such well-known performers as Tom Paxton, Chris Smither, Kate and Anna McGarrigle and John Gorka. Their schedule for this year can be found at: www.afterdarkmusicseries.com

Trey Anastasio (of Phish) and The Dude of Life perform Our resort communities are loaded with great local music spots; The Rusty Nail in Stowe and The Perfect Wife in Manchester, just to mention a couple. To see a full listing, complete with links to individual websites, use our Travel Planner.
