One of the oldest festivals takes place on the scenic campus of Marlboro College in southern Vermont where, for over 50 years, master concert artists pass on their knowledge and passion to younger players.
Through July and August, approximately 70 - 80 musicians gather at the scenic Marlboro campus. About two-thirds are young professionals who had to pass a rigorous audition process in order to be accepted.
They spend the next few weeks in rehearsal and performing alongside their more seasoned musical mentors. There are no classes; the musicians are organized into small ensembles that rehearse 3-4 times per week for the next seven weeks.
The staff at Marlboro has included such renowned players as Rudolph Serkin, the founder, Pablo Casals, Louis Moyes and the current artistic directors Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida. Many of the students have gone on to careers as soloists and in various ensembles.
If, after playing together, sharing ideas and making beautiful music, an ensemble feels ready to perform, they will be scheduled for a concert the following week. Performances are held through the summer usually beginning the fourth week of the festival. Concert schedule
So, the young people gain the wisdom and experience of the older musicians, while the older pros are invigorated with the energy from the younger ones.
