Waterbury sits at the junction of Vermont's scenic Rte. 100, US Rte. 2 and I-89. Whether traveling from the north, south, east or west you'll find Waterbury is a great place to stop.
Traveling along Route 100 and Route 2, you find Waterbury’s broad main street, lined with well-preserved stately old homes and the classic White Meeting House, built in 1825. Rusty Parker Memorial Park serves as the village green, hosting the Farmers Market and weekly concerts on summer Thursdays.
Behind the Park rests the crown jewel of Waterbury’s downtown: the newly-restored Waterbury Train Station, hosting the Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Visitor Center & Café www.greenmountaincoffee.com. Stop in for a taste of coffee lore and a fresh cup of java! The Station’s Community Room is full of Waterbury history, local events and attractions, and travel information.
Historic Stowe Street offers a full range of shopping opportunities, and award-winning restaurants abound throughout the downtown. Waterbury’s Library and Historical Society are housed in the home of Dr. Henry Janes, Chief Surgeon for the Union during the Civil War; our historic walking tour takes you through two centuries of Vermont lore.
North along Route 100 lie the major destinations for food-lovers – Ben & Jerry’s www.benjerry.com, Cold Hollow Cider Mill www.coldhollow.com, the Cabot Cheese Annex www.cabotcheese.com – and Waterbury Center, with its stunning views of the Worcester Range. In the 1800s, the farmers lived up in the Center, while the businesspeople lived down in the Village.
To the east, the Winooski River and Route 2 make their way northwest from Montpelier. Along the river’s banks lie a walking trail, the Vermont State Office Complex, and the Ice Center www.icecenter.org. In fall, a thousand runners arrive for the Leaf-Peepers 5K and half-marathon www.cvrunners.org .
Look to the west, toward the immediately-recognizable spine of Camel’s Hump, and you will see the mountains that define our valley town. Hiking and climbing spots are found throughout the Waterbury area, and our natural spaces are renowned destinations for mountain bikers, Frisbee golfers, fishing enthusiasts and river paddlers.
History, arts, music, good food, outdoor recreation and beautiful vistas – whatever you look for in Vermont, you will find just what you’re looking for in Waterbury!
