Tour "The Birthplace of Vermont"

The Southern Windsor region is rich in early American history and offers endless opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts in winter, spring, summer and fall. Nestled between the Connecticut River and the Green Mountains, visitors can enjoy a mix of rural countryside, historic industrial towns and resort villages.

Here you’ll find the communities of Windsor, Springfield, Ludlow, Grafton, and Weston.  The Vermont Constitution was debated and signed on July 2, 1777, in the town of Windsor, known as the “Birthplace of Vermont.”

The Vermont constitution was America’s first to prohibit slavery, establish universal voting rights for all males, and authorize a public school system. The building where the signing took place is preserved as the Old Constitution House, which is open from late May through early October.

Precision Valley
Early 19th century inventions of hydraulic pumps and rifle parts led to the birth and development of mass production and the American machine tool industry. Windsor and Springfield, with their access to water power and a reliable workforce had one of the highest concentrations of these machine tool plants in this area earning it the name “Precision Valley.”

Ludlow lies along the Black River and VT Route 107.  It’s the home of Okemo Ski Resort, a four season destination, with an array of lodging and dining in the area.  Ludlow was part of the same machine tool boom.  The former mill in the center of town is now home to several shops and restaurants.

South on VT Route 100 is Weston, one of Vermont’s scenic gems with its town green forming the hub of activity here. Weston, with its array of shops, including the venerable Vermont Country Store, is a popular stop for travelers.

Other communities of note in this region are Chester, Cavendish, Tyson, South Reading, Ascutney, and Brownsville, home of the Ascutney Mountain Resort.  This is a region steeped in history and perfect for sightseeing. Why not drop by and see for yourself.
