"Granite Center of the World"

A HISTORIC DOWNTOWN

Barre is the "Granite Center of the World," with a heritage anchored in the stone arts and the cultural traditions of its European ancestors. Wedged between Groton State Forest and the spine of the Green Mountains, and flanked by the world famous Rock of Ages granite quarries and visitor center, Barre offers a unique Vermont experience.

Barre’s granite is so remarkable in quantity and quality it attracted the most highly skilled stone craftsmen from around the world throughout the 19th century. Visitors can discover some of the great stone artists by visiting local cemeteries and the many intricate carvings and life-size statues throughout Barre.

Visit Barre and take in Vermont’s history this summer while keeping safety and responsibility in mind.
