WEEK 6, OCT. 21, 2026

The peak of foliage season has passed for most locations in the state, but foliage is still clinging to beech and oak trees and will continue to do so for a while longer. These trees hold their leaves longer than their neighbors, providing deep oranges and reds in late autumn. In central and southern Vermont, the aspens are showing brilliant canary yellows, and with the sunny weather, they really stand out. Soon, larch trees (the only conifers in Vermont whose needles change color and drop each year) will show their golden hues as well. There’s still plenty of beauty out there, and the sunny weather coupled with crunching leaves underfoot are great conditions for fall adventure.

Best bets:  Southern parts of the state have the most variety of color right now, while central and northern Vermont are giving way to broader views from overlooks as those regions move into stick season. Drives through the mountain gap roads, such as Brandon or Rochester gaps, will provide great vistas and access to many hiking trails. Dirt roads and scenic byways through the Lower Connecticut River Valley, the Stone Valley, and The Shires regions will allow visitors to bask in the glow of this year’s long autumn.
